Perennial Nursery: De Groene Aarde
One of the most rewarding things you can do is to grow your own plants. Being outdoors and physically active is definitely an added advantage in what we do – a welcome addition to our office jobs.
I started growing all kinds of conifer varieties in the open ground around 1988. When my brother Arjan joined the company as a co-partner, we replaced the conifers with cut shrubs and later, perennials.
Our perennials’ range is completely aimed at gardeners. We supply these via specialized wholesalers. We also grow large batches of hostas and pennisetums on contract for a fellow perennial grower. We supply all our plants in P9 pots.
Our important varieties comprise of: Pennisetum alopecuroides in 6 varieties, including our largest variety ‘Hameln’ (55,000 pieces per year), Carex morrowii (6 varieties), Heuchera and Tiarella (28 varieties), Liriope muscari (3 varieties), Hostas in (24 varieties – 40,000 per year) and some loners such as Ophiopogon ‘Niger’, Alchemilla mollis, Molinea ‘Black Arrows’, Agastache ‘Blue Fortune’, Brunnera ‘Silver Spear’ and the second most important species next to Pennisetum ‘Hameln’ Geranium ‘Rozanne’ (20,000 pieces per year).
We do not use plant protection products against diseases and pests. Instead, we use rice husks in the potting soil as a partial replacement of peat to aid in making the potting soil airy.
After potting, we sprinkle the pots with a mixture of rice husks against weed growth.
